Protein fulfils a great many tasks in our bodies. An adult requires just under 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. It serves to build up the body cells (e.g. muscles), is a constituent of hormones and enzymes and contributes to the healing of wounds.
The most important suppliers of protein to the body are meat, fish, eggs and milk products. But other foods also contain protein and contribute to our daily protein intake: nuts, pulse, grains, potatoes.
